I'm most often inspired by two things, by traditional stories, such as mythology and fairy tales, and by the music that I listen to. Many of the descriptions on my deviations contain lyrics to the music that inspired them, or that I was listening to when I made them. Since I have two main sources of inspiration, I thought I would combine them here. This is inspired both by the Greek myth of Icarus and by the Ani DiFranco song of the same name (lyrics below). Unlike in the original myth, my figure's wings don't fall apart from the heat of the sun. She is being done in by the distraction of the natural beauty around her. She falters in the air because she is paying more attention to it than to the intricacies of staying aloft.

"dreams like this roll in like a cold front
thunderous thunder and lightening in tow
and your tiny little light gets even smaller
as you heed the heaven's mighty show
and I don't mean heaven like god-like
'cause the animal I am knows very well
that nature is our teacher and our mother
and God is just another story that we tell...'s just like Icarus ascending
never intending to look back
nature's law and your tragic flaw
combine to send you flying
into the arms of a Venus flytrap"
- Ani DiFranco - "Icarus"

sorry i haven't had much of a chance to get around to checking out your stuff, but i've been really busy the last couple weeks.

so here's a good place to start i guess.

this is really nice, you got the effect of the sun perfectly! it's dreamy, but at the same time it seems realistic - very cool. the only thing i'd suggest is maybe blurring parts of the clouds, namely the top-right corner, where it looks too scribbly. it looks great everywhere else, but there it doesn't give the same effect. anyway, very nice, good job!

Great job....I saw it and immediately thought of Icarus :)
Hmmm, I like the color tones (warm oranges mixed with the threatening turbulant greys and blues of the sky and ocean), the turbulant water (indeed the water is as threatening as the sky is - tis a danger to soar as it is a danger to fail and fall), the rays of sun peaking out from the clouds (I have always loved that effect), and the wings look like they are battered and in danger of falling apart. However there are some areas that need a little improvement. The way the clothe of her dress falls need more folds or flow to make it appear as if it is molded to her body and is interacting with the environment. I know that is truly a difficult thing to accomplish as I have tried and failed in some of my forays into digital artistry so unfortunately I cannot help you in that area:-(. But if you can pull it off then kudos to you for it would add so much to this image. The clouds on the lower portion - wonderful don't change a thing. The clouds in the upper right look to sharply defined and not billowy looks too much like a rock ledge jutting out instead of a massive cloud head. Hmm, the other thing is looking at your user name, I wonder if it would add a little more symbology to inject a little of the Rapuzel imagery into the scene. Instead of her hair being just normaling flat and laying on her back, how about making it a long braid the dangle way down past her back and toward the sea (not touching it but it could be a one or two feet below her angle) It would serve to dangle like a weight that is dragging her down to the sea as she is trying to soar skyward....the symbology is that her own body/self will betray her and drag her down.

:-)Good Luck with the contest:-)
You know what I like most about this work? The clouds and the water. There are so many cloud renders in photoshop, and so many great ways to do it, but most of them look alike. Yours are very unique, very full and organic. It's hard to find people with your kind of skill here. I love this site, but this is what I'm looking for. You might like some of mine, although I'm expanding my gallery now. Check it out!
Extreamly well done! (One of my favorite subjects) BTW, what wings did you use?
